The first European conference aimed at promoting intercultural, anti-racist and multilingual education entitled Equality in Education: Collaborating to combat Racism and Xenophobia across Europe was held in Leeds between 13-16 December 1997. The Conference attracted over 200 delegates representing 16 countries. It brought together committed educationalists and anti-racist activists seeking to use education as a key vehicle for creating a just Europe free from racism and xenophobia.
One of the main resolutions at the Conference was the establishment of a Europe-wide network to enable educationalists to continue their collaboration in promoting policies and practices relating to intercultural and multilingual education.
The conference organising committee has since established the Network on Intercultural and Multilingual Education in Europe (NIMEE). Its aim is to encourage debate, share good practice, promote different perspectives, and to influence education policy makers at local and national levels. NIMEE will help to co-ordinate responses to pertinent issues at individual government and European community levels.
The Network is open to organisations, institutions and individuals involved in multicultural, anti-racist and bilingual education. NIMEE believes in the importance of minority communities having a central voice in promoting issues in relation to multilingual and intercultural education. The Network will strive to ensure that the diversity we are all keen to celebrate is acknowledged and recognised in educational projects and initiatives.
NIMEE already has Europe-wide links through existing projects involving network members from various countries. The Network will develop these existing links further through a range of activities including:
| a regular newsletter for members | |
| conferences and seminars | |
| policy papers and publications and the recently established web sites | |
| collaborative projects |
The first official meeting of the representatives of NIMEE was held at The 2nd European Conference on Equality in Education: Collaborating to combat Racism and Xenophobia across Europe in May 1999. At .
The organisers of the first conference in Leeds have drawn up a draft charter which we would like members to consider, comment, amend and improve upon so that this can be adopted at the Conference in Verona.
